Peaceful abyss or chaotic tornado
If it hadn’t been for the new computers, or the new books, or the new tables, the library would have been hidden in the shadows. However, the constant demand for new methods of learning drove the school to improve the aging library. The nice librarians seemed human in this friendly environment, not like the ones you see in movies. Sitting at a random table with random people taking notes made me blend in or so I thought. The constant screams of giggling kids looking at Rage Comics or the constant yelps from Spencer playing a game called Munchkin made me want to lose my hearing completely. All this noise and all of the cluster, it made me wonder does the library ever slow down?
The morning of January 27 2012, was a chilly morning as all the mornings were in Petaluma, as I was let out of zero period I decided to check the library and see if my friends were in there or to see if it was hectic. I opened the swinging doors and to my amazement the students that were in the library were actually working. I strode over to my friend Will, who was searching MLB trade rumors on the web, and I asked him if he did the PE homework and if we had a test coming up in that class. Then as if the wind blew them in, all the “popular” kids rushed in and occupied all the tables and began to talk. Almost immediately after these kids entered the noise level rose from quiet to manageable. Then the bell rung for class and we all dispersed out of the library.
After fourth period, Spanish, I walked back into the library hoping to put the finishing touches on my math homework for sixth period. I walked up the Ms. Martin’s desk and asked for an Algebra II book, which I was given. Then I walked to a table and began my work. Worrying about not getting my math homework done my mind drifted to what classes I was taking next year, Anglers ,Chemistry, APUSH, Trig, English, Band, Spanish 3, then I I got worried and changed the subject. Once again I started on my notes, when my friend called me over to read a rage comic, I read it and then stated, read it, laughed at it, and wrote it. Then the “popular” kids came back and once again filled all the tables and began to talk. One table in general created the most noise, it was full of guys in their basketball jackets and they were goofing off and enjoying life when one of them reminded the others of homework then the conversations died down. Then the early bell rang and I slugged to fifth period.
RING! RING! Finally the fifth period bell rang and let us out, I stepped outside and nearly got hit by a kid running to the lunch line. I then walked into the library, I was called over by Spencer Hubbard, Christopher Martinek and Bobby Maciel to play a game called Munchkin. We sat down and started to play right as the “popular” kids walked in and filled up the rest of the tables and began to chat. Ten minutes later with the game in full swing the noise level was rising and Mrs. Koval and Ms. Martin were doing everything to keep it down, but our game was only adding to the noise because Spencer used a Wandering Monster card and played the most powerful foe on Chris. Chris was too weak to defeat it, but too powerful to run away, so he begged Bobby for help and was denied his lifeline so the monster killed Chris eliminating him from the game. The library was getting louder- the computers and monitors buzzing, the students and teachers yelling, the chairs and paper squeaking, all contributed to the noise level of the library. Just as it seemed the noise would never stop, the early bell for sixth period rang.
After sixth got out I had 30 minutes till my ride home arrived so I sauntered over to the library to wait and watch. It happened to be a Friday so there was not much going on in the library. The noise level was at a low hum and I sat taking notes as the librarians picked up and turned off computers and gotready to leave for the weekend even though they had to stay until 4. Then as if on cue more kids flowed in and disrupted the peace. Then my phone rang signaling it was time to leave.
I don’t know if the library is always like that, but I was when I was there. The library had loud kids, the lab had quiet kids. The librarians were loud, the kids were loud. The computers were smart, the nerds were smart. The air was cold, the water was cold.
