Melting Pot

Predictably, it isn’t the high ceilings or the glaring fluorescent lights or the drab carpet or the outdated computers that make Casa Grande Library unique. It isn’t the nondescript tables and matching chairs. It isn’t the presence of new, glossy books or even the anticipation of iPads that distinguishes this library. It’s in the way you can see in keen eyes the importance of education and a close-knit school. It’s in the way graffiti art is proudly displayed, plush couches are carefully positioned, magazines are agreeably disheveled. It’s in the way students stride in as if they own the place, because speculatively, they do.

One could argue that not everything in the library is necessary. I disagree. The vibrant artwork, the encouraging posters, and the comfortable beanbags are irreplaceable. Every element in this library is indispensable: the environment of support, amenity, and contentment is sustained by the presence of these items. Along with material substance, librarians and teachers maintain a stable atmosphere and are always ready to offer guidance and assistance.

The first thing one notices in the library is the noise. The constant chatter, buzz and murmur of conversation that are present outside of the library are welcomed inside as well. Students, whether reading textbooks, tapping at computers, or scrawling with pencils are refining their knowledge. Beneath the clamor – peals of laughter and groans of frustration, exchanges of knowledge and of homework, whispers of pages and thumps of book covers – an indisputable desire to gain knowledge can be sensed.

My favorite area of the library is the bookshelves lining the far wall of the library. Books, books, books – the bookshelves are filled with countless adventures waiting to be experienced. I enjoy seeing a fellow student sitting alone, leaning against a bookshelf, eyes rushing to discover foreign lands and dark secrets, and fingers itching to turn the page. New arrivals are always boastfully exhibited on top of the shelves, displaying intriguing titles and well-known authors. Students enjoy having a say in which books are purchased for their enjoyment.

Passing by the circle of couches in the library, one often hears snippets of conversation and shrieks of laughter. The couches are large and comfortable and the bright green pillows contrast the dark material. This area is an enjoyable place to spend a rainy afternoon or catch up on reading. The couches are an exceptional place to gather with a close group of friends.

Students researching are often identified by their dull eyes fixed lazily on the screen of a computer. The computers also attract students who are technologically friendly and enjoy interacting online. The interest in electronics has drawn the head librarian, Ms. Koval to invest in buying iPads for student use while in the library. She will also invest in apps available for this technology. As our generation is being exposed to more advanced technology, we are transitioning from using paper, pencils, and textbooks to using online resources. The Casa Grande Library embraces these changes and makes them available to students.

The Casa Grande Library is a melting pot of objectives. Some go to study, and some go to interact. Some go to read Google books, and some go to read paperbacks. Some go to receive enlightenment, and some go to relax. Some go to pursue knowledge, and some go to eat lunch. No matter the reason, students of all intent benefit from the Casa Grande Library.
