Going to see a movie at the Cinemas theater has become so much more than just that: hardly anyone goes there anymore just to see a movie. If someone wanted to do that, they might as well just rent one on Netflix and not be down $9.50. The whole idea of going to the movies -popcorn and snacks, warmth and comfort, exhilaration and excitement- has changed from a place to just see a new film into a place to socialize, a place to go when you’re bored, a place to go on a rainy day. It has transformed from a spool of colored rolling lights to the ultimate thing to do when there is nothing else. It doesn’t even matter if the movie being watched is the best movie ever or the worst; the big screen in the dark room still seems to mesmerize its viewers. The cost is not just for the movie, its for the joy of seeing it outside the screen of your own smaller TV.
The way that they first welcome their paying customers into their shiny entertaining trap to get more money is by placing the snack bar right in line of everyone’s view, making it nearly impossible to pass by and not pay attention to the smell of buttered popcorn and the icy cold drinks that they have just behind the counter. As soon as your eyes first meet the colorful packages of candy and the different varieties of treats that are there just asking to be savored, the high price of $5.00 for a bag of popcorn seems to magically drop when the light yellow color glazes over to look like gold. There are, however, those that don’t care about snacks. Go in. Watch the movie. High tail it out at the first sign of the end credits.
Inside the theater, the atmosphere is dimly lighted and warm. The sea of seats offer endless possibilities to where you can sit for the next two hours, ranging from the very front and center of the theater to the middle to the very back at the top up the lighted stairs. The red patterned upholstery which is soft to the touch and velvety carpeted walls offer a sort of coziness to what some might not think of as a comfortable place to go all the time. The arms of each chair are optional, which can either be pushed up or pulled down, and placed at the end is a cup holder to hold a drink or whatever else one may not want to hold during the movie. Overall, it’s a place that they have tried to make as nice as possible, and depending on your opinion, they have succeeded quite nicely.
If one arrives early to get good seats and is just waiting for the movie to start, they have even thought of entertainment for before the actual movie. This entertainment consists of trivia questions about other films and advertisements for the people who have payed to have their ads shown. The trivia consists of facts such as "How much does an Oscar trophy weigh?" and "Did you know the first names of all the characters in the movie Inception spell out the word ‘DREAMS’?" along with reminders to put on the 3D glasses that have been provided if the movie has been upgraded to be shown in 3D.
While the movie is playing, all other reality is forgotten as the movie surrounds everyone in it and all emotions that the characters are feeling are also felt by the dumbstruck, flabbergasted, stupefied audience -who is probably also on the edge of their seats- the incredible state of so many feelings. In that sort of sense the simple science of moving pictures has become anything but simple and has been upgraded into something with which everyone can relate. All emotions belong from the instant the movie begins to the big screen, which from then on influences our experience of seeing the film. Without a good movie, most of the movie theater experience has been ruined.
The movies are also just a great place to see people whom one might not normally see, and even to meet new people. When watching a movie, everyone in the theater is watching the exact same thing as others and experiencing the exact same emotions as others and sitting near each other and that makes the movie not just entertaining, but it brings people together. Even since everyone there is not someone everyone else knows, it makes all the viewers come together as a sort of family, but a family that is only together for the length of the film. They may not talk to one another or even be in contact at all, but everyone in the theater has just experienced most of the same things that everyone else did.
Whether the movie theater experience is enjoyable to one or not, it is one of the most common places to go for entertainment. The things such as the popcorn and comfortable walls just add to the experience, along with the joy of getting to see a brand new movie that is sure to be a new conversation starter the next day. Movies can make one think, experience, and realize things that they never had before, and it’s an overall great place to go just to hang out with friends and family. The genres range from happy movies rated G to thrillers rated R, so there is sure to be a movie to watch that would be to anyone’s liking. The cost of a ticket may be a bit much, but when a full movie experience is needed for entertainment purposes, the Boulevard Cinemas is the place to go.
